A list of family-friendly events that are happening near you throughout the May bank holidays.
May is right around the corner and with that, three bank holidays that you may be hoping to fill with fun activities with the kids. Look no further as we have found some great affordable events and activities that the whole family can enjoy this spring.
Bristol and Bath
Enjoy the Spring weather by joining this year’s City Nature Challenge, taking place around the nation. From 28 April to 1 May, get outside and try to record as many different types of wildlife as possible on the iNaturalist app and be a part of supporting the nation’s conservation efforts. Join experts on walks around Bristol and Bath and learn about different types of wildlife, all for free. Find the walking route locations and times here.
Let your little one unleash their artistic side at Windmill Hill Market in Bristol. On Saturday, 6 May, the Windmill Hill City Farm will be hosting Colourful Minds Art Club where children can create exciting themed arts and crafts. Children tickets are £6.50 with free tickets for accompanying adults. Find out more.
On 20 May, Bath Racecourse is hosting Children’s Air Ambulance Family Fun Day, where kids can get a close-up view of their helicopter. There will also be music, stalls, and activities for the whole family to enjoy. The best part is, entry is free for the whole family, just make sure you book your free tickets before they run out.
Dorset
Lyme Regis in Dorset is hosting the Fossil Festival on the Jurassic Coast. The weekend long event (28 and 29 April) will take place on the seafront and host different events with fossil experts, including shows, performances, and seafront walks. The free event requires no advance booking.
Head to the Abbotsbury Swannery on May 27 and 28 for the Food and Craft Fair. Fun for the whole family, there will be food and drink stalls, arts and crafts stations, pedal go-karts and a swan maze. Entry for children ages 5-15 is only £1 with adult tickets priced at £7.50. Book here.
Corfe Castle is hosting a free family event with a dog show, stalls and fair games on 29 May. Enjoy a day at the castle while keeping the kids entertained. There is no advanced booking required for the event.
Wiltshire
Kick off the first bank holiday by heading to the town of Downton for their annual Cuckoo Fair. The little ones can enjoy fairground attractions, clowns and street entertainers. The event is free but be prepared to pay £7 for car parking.
For some Coronation themed fun, head to the Coronation Family Fun Day in Trowbridge on 7 May. The event promises to have traditional games and stalls hosted by community groups. The event takes place at Studley Green Community Centre and is free to enter.
Cheltenham
Cheltenham is also hosting a Coronation event on 6 and 7 May. The free celebration is taking place at Pittville Pump Room with live music, dance sessions and a screening of Paddington. There are loads of other events and games planned for the weekend, plan your visit here.
While this is not taking place during one of the bank holiday weekends, it is something you or your kids won’t want to miss. Zeus, the biggest walking dinosaur in Europe will be visiting the Cheltenham Promenade on 21 May. Turn up for free to see the giant dino! Location and timings can be found here.
