Cut the costs of back-to-school

21 August 2025

As summer ends, many families start to feel the pressure of back-to-school costs. From uniforms and shoes to stationery and lunches, the expenses can quickly add up.

According to the Child Poverty Action Group, the cost of education in the UK is now over ÂŁ1,000 a year for a child in primary school and nearly ÂŁ2,300 for secondary school. And with more than one child, the financial strain multiplies. At Great Western Credit Union, we believe in doing good, always. That means helping our members find practical ways to manage costs and access support. Here are some smart tips to help cut back-to-school expenses this year:

Shop second-hand where you can

Thanks to the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, schools in England will soon no longer require more than three branded uniform items. Whilst not law yet, it’s a promising step towards giving parents more flexibility to buy affordable uniform items from supermarkets or high street stores.

Until then, basics like uniforms, shoes, bags, pencil cases, and even calculators can often be found in great condition second-hand. Many schools and community groups run uniform swap shops, which are a brilliant way to find pre-loved uniform for free or at very low cost, find your closest one here. You can also check online platforms like Vinted, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace for more back to school bargains.

Top tip: Buy a size up where you can as it’ll help uniforms last longer and reduce the need for mid-year replacements.

See what support is available

Depending on your circumstances, your council may be able to help with:

  • School uniform grants

  • Free school meals

  • Home-to-school transport

Uniform grants can be worth up to ÂŁ150 per child, but eligibility and amounts vary by area. Even if you don’t qualify for uniform help, it’s worth checking your local council’s website to see what support is available. You might still be eligible for free school meals or transport assistance, both of which can take real pressure off your budget.

And it’s not just council support, many people don’t realise they could be missing out on benefits they’re entitled to. Even a small amount of extra help can go a long way when you're facing back-to-school costs. To find out what support you might be eligible for, try the Better Off Calculator, it’s quick, easy, and can help make sure you’re getting everything you’re entitled to.

Plan ahead for packed lunches

If you don’t qualify for free school meals, it’s worth comparing the cost of school dinners with packed lunches. Planning meals in advance helps cut costs and reduce waste. Affordable, nutritious options like pasta salads, wraps, and leftovers can be both filling and budget-friendly.
