Frequently asked questions

Are salary deduction car loans a good idea?

For some people, a car loan repaid through their salary can be a useful way to cover a big purchase without having to worry about having all of the money upfront. It can also provide peace of mind if there are any surprise costs.

Before borrowing, it's important to make sure the repayments fit comfortably within your budget and that you're only borrowing what you need.

Do people take out loans for cars?

Many people take out loans for cars and other big purchases. But, it’s always important to understand you need to pay back the money you borrowed and the interest added up over a set time period. This means you’ll pay more than you initially borrowed and may have your credit at risk if the instalments are not paid on time.

Are salary deduction loans secured or unsecured?

Generally, loans like salary deduction car loans from credit unions are unsecured. This means you don't need to use your home, car or any other asset as security when borrowing for renovations, repairs or upgrades around the home.

At Great Western Credit Union, our salary deduction car loans are unsecured, giving you the flexibility to cover a larger purchase upfront.

What can I use a salary deduction car loan for?

A salary deduction car loan can be used for purchasing a new or used car or covering the costs of any urgent repairs or replacement parts needed for your car.

Whether you're buying new or second hand, a salary deduction car loan can help you spread the cost.

Can I get a salary deduction car loan with bad credit?

Take our quick eligibility check to find out whether a salary deduction car loan is right for you.

How quickly can I receive the funds from a salary deduction car loan?

A salary deduction car loan can help you get on the road sooner, giving you access to the funds you need straight away if your application is approved.

Are salary deduction car loans better than salary sacrifice car schemes?

It depends on your circumstances, the type of car you want and what your employer offers.

A salary deduction car loan could be suitable if you want to borrow money upfront to buy a new or used car and own the vehicle yourself. Your agreed loan repayments are deducted from your salary through payroll, helping you manage the cost through regular payments.

A salary sacrifice car scheme works differently. You give up part of your salary in exchange for a car provided through your employer. Salary sacrifice arrangements can have different tax, National Insurance and eligibility considerations.

If you want to buy and own a car using a loan with repayments taken through payroll, a salary deduction car loan could be the right option for you.
